The history of the Canadian Army, began when the title first came into official use in November 1940, during the Second World War, and is still used today.

Following the 1967 Canadian Forces Reorganization Act the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force were amalgamated in 1968 as the Canadian Armed Forces.

Unlike the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force, whose personnel were overwhelmingly English-Canadians and where English was the sole language of command, the Canadian Army was the only service that made some allowance for French-Canadians.

Military operations that the Canadian Forces have participated in around the world since 1945. Not all international operations were given an official Canadian operation name. The Directorate of History and Heritage has given unofficial operations names using location and year which here are denoted with an asterisk at the end, i.e. Poland 1945*.

In 1990, Canadian Armed Forces members were sent to a Quebec community west of Montréal during the Oka Crisis to help deal with an Indigenous land dispute. The Canadian Armed Forces also often help the RCMP monitor our borders for criminal activity, such as the international smuggling of drugs and undocumented immigrants.
