There are about 35 million refugees globally. Many people feel overwhelmed by the numbers and see people moving across borders as a global crisis. We at Amnesty International disagree that it is a crisis of numbers. The people are not the problem.

Over the past few years, Amnesty International offices on four continents have been working to support refugees in a way and on a scale never seen before. The goal? To increase the number of people who can start their lives in a safe country. The method? Community sponsorship.

Who is a refugee? A refugee is a person who has fled their own country and is unable or unwilling to return because they have a well-founded fear of persecution based on one of five reasons: their race; religion; nationality; membership of a particular social group; or political opinion.
