President Trump said Japan and South Korea would face tariffs of 25 percent unless they reached an agreement with the United States. Other countries received notice of higher levies.

The trade war chaos that engulfed the early months of President Donald Trump’s second term looked set to return Monday as he threatened two major U.S. trading partners with higher duties ahead of a key negotiating deadline.

“Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICs, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff,” Trump posted at about 10 p.m. Eastern Time Sunday on his Truth Social site. “There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Kazakhstan will face 25% import duties starting Aug. 1, while goods from Laos and Myanmar will face a 40% tariff.
