A fire early Thursday at the site of the former Blue Heron paper mill is expected to smolder for the next 24 to 48 hours, possibly sending smoke and ash over Oregon City, officials said. Regulators with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality said the fire did not pose a risk to river and air quality.

OREGON CITY, Ore. (KATU) — A 3-alarm fire broke out at the former Blue Heron paper mill located in Oregon City early Thursday morning. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene just after 3:45 a.m. Several streets including 99E are closed in the area around the old mill.
A fire, called in at about 3:45 a.m. Thursday at the former Blue Heron paper mill in Oregon City, has closed Southeast McLoughlin Boulevard, Main Street and Oregon Highway 99E. The Oregon Department of Transportation says 99E is closed in both directions from Oregon City to just north of Canby.
