In the hours before Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a 30-day pause on US President Donald Trump’s threatened 25% tariff on Canadian goods, the co-founder of one of Canada’s largest auto parts manufacturers was bewildered.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday in a social media post that the United States had agreed to pause threatened tariffs for “at least 30 days.” The announcement followed two phone calls with President Donald Trump on Monday and came after the United States and Mexico reached a similar agreement.

Trump on Saturday had directed that 25% tariffs on most imports from the two American partners — and 10% on Canadian energy products — go into effect at midnight Tuesday.
