AI-powered search engine Perplexity says it's building its own web browser. It'll be called Comet, and it's set to arrive 'soon.'

Perplexity, a company known for its AI-powered search engine, has announced it is developing its web browser called Comet – a move seen as a threat to several other leading AI names like ChatGPT, Bard, Grok and likewise more.

Perplexity has teased the launch of Comet, an AI-powered web browser aimed at transforming internet browsing with agentic AI capabilities.

It has recently been expanding its offerings—for example, it recently launched a deep research tool competing with similar ones provided by OpenAI and Google, as well as Sonar, an API for generative AI-powered search.

Search, AI, browsers: all three technologies naturally mix together. So it should be no surprise that AI-powered search engine, Perplexity AI, is teasing its entry into the browser market with “Comet.

With the introduction of Comet, Perplexity will be stepping into a highly competitive browser market, which is already dominated by established players like Google Chrome. The market has several third-party alternative browsers, including the soon-to-be-launched Dia browser from The Browser Company.

Perplexity AI, led by Aravind Srinivas, is set to launch a new browser named Comet, aimed at providing an agentic search experience. While a teaser has been released, details about its features and release date remain unclear amid Google's market dominance.

Perplexity AI has been rapidly rolling out new features. The company’s open-sourced R1 1776, a variant of the DeepSeek-R1 language model, was fine-tuned to remove censorship and deliver factual responses. The model weights are available on Hugging Face, and it can be accessed via the Sonar API.
