Chicago faith-based leaders are preparing to giveaway 40,000 eggs this weekend to help families in need as some Chicagoans are grappling with high costs of the grocery staple due to a nationwide bird flu outbreak.

The Rev. Charlie Dates and volunteers will distribute cartons of eggs at locations on the South Side on Saturday. Dates says he was moved to act after witnessing the struggles in the community as food prices have soared over the last year.

As egg prices increase, two churches on the city's South Side are taking matters into their own hands. They will be giving out 40,000 eggs for free this weekend. Volunteers from the churches—Progressive Chicago Church and Salem Baptist — gathered on Friday to package and prepare the eggs.
