Bears sent to University of Florida for examination after 89-year-old Robert Markel of Jerome, his dog killed during attack.

The attack occurred in a rural area east of Naples, just south of Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area, authorities said.

After what sounded like gunfire, FWC officials emerged from the woods with a dead bear, possibly connected to the May 5 mauling of a Collier man.
