In South Florida, the heart of the Haitian community in the United States, the announcement has caused fear and indignation. TPS beneficiaries and advocates have denounced the decision, saying Haiti continues to be unsafe amid extreme gang violence, rising hunger and crumbling public institutions.

"We are not criminals… we are law-abiding citizens," community members said at a press conference in Little Haiti.

Hundreds of thousands of Haitians in South Florida and across the country are now facing possible deportation after the Trump administration ended an extension of their Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
