Travel and spending during China’s Lunar New Year holiday hit new records this year, giving the government an encouraging boost as it seeks to ramp up the ailing economy.

China’s consumer inflation accelerated for the first time since August, caused by a burst of household spending around the Lunar New Year holiday even as deflationary pressures persist.

Tourism revenues in China during the eight-day holiday that ended Tuesday rose 7.0% in year-over-year terms, while the number of domestic trips rose 5.9%, state media reported.

Travelers spread across China this Lunar New Year, leading to 677 billion yuan ($93 billion) in domestic tourism spending.

Statistics indicate domestic consumption broke several records during this year’s holiday, with lower-end spending seeing the biggest gains.
