Arriving from Chicago, Slater was placed on the Yankees' active roster about an hour before Wednesday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, with lefty-hitting catcher-first baseman J.C. Escarra optioned to Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Yankees continue to retool their roster on the margins. After adding infielders Ryan McMahon and Amed Rosario last week, they landed White Sox outfielder Austin Slater on Wednesday, the team announced. Pitching prospect Gage Ziehl, who has pitched in Single-A and Double-A this season, is headed to Chicago.
