The state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter has begun with services in Washington, D.C. and his hometown of Plains, Georgia. The ceremonies celebrating Carter in D.C. will include a departure ceremony at the Capitol, the National Funeral Service at Washington National Cathedral and a final departure from Joint Base Andrews.

Jimmy Carter was celebrated Thursday for his personal humility and public service before, during and after his presidency during a funeral at Washington National Cathedral featuring the kind of pageantry the 39th U.

In this otherwise unassuming corner of west Georgia, “Carter culture” blossomed, marked by faith, curiosity, and service that melded into Carter’s bones.

Neighbors in President Jimmy Carter's hometown are preparing to welcome thousands who will honor his life over the next several days. “Well, it is sad. He was a huge part of our community, but I kind of take away from it-- it's a time to celebrate his life,” Kelly Kight, a Plains business owner, told WJCL 22.

Jimmy Carter wrote that Plains, the small town of about 600 people in southwest Georgia, would always be his home.
