U.S. immigration officials say they intend to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Uganda, after he declined an offer to be deported to Costa Rica in exchange for remaining in jail and pleading guilty to human smuggling charges.

Abrego, wrongfully deported to a notorious prison in El Salvador, now faces removal to Uganda just a day after being freed from a Tennessee jail.

Until Friday, it wasn’t clear whether officials would let Abrego Garcia’s criminal trial conclude before they initiated any removal proceedings.
