In what is its most ambitious military operation in recent years, Israel launched a series of air strikes against Iran on Friday, targeting nuclear sites, missile facilities and other military infrastructure. The attack killed some of the country’s key military and civilian personnel as well.
The United States swiftly distanced itself from Israel’s attack on Iran, saying its long-time Middle Eastern ally was on its own in what threatens to explode into an all-out war.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has launched a large-scale retaliatory attack, firing over 100 hypersonic and ballistic missiles at Israel. The barrage breached Israeli air defence systems, striking deep inside Tel Aviv and other cities. At least 41 people were wounded, with two in critical condition.
Several explosions were heard in Tehran, the Iranian state media outlets reported. Reports indicate a fire at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport.
While Iran may hate Israel, it has not (under this telling of its events) seen a full-blown war as in its interests. For that reason, it has been reserving its most devastating weapons — and those of its remaining allies, like the Houthis in Yemen or Iraqi militias — in order to avoid escalation.
