Kwanzaa in Milwaukee began in a jubilant display of dance and drums on Thursday night. At various points, drummers urged on the Nefertari African Dance Company and attendees alike, and impassioned speeches were given about the holiday's seven principles.

In the heart of the community, the annual Kwanzaa celebration brought together neighbors, families, and creatives to honor African heritage and culture.

The six-day day festival of Kwanzaa began Thursday with celebrations playing out all over the world — none more enthusiastic than the gathering at the Four Star Theatre in Grand Rapids.
