A proposed five-year casino moratorium hit a roadblock Tuesday in the Iowa Senate after sailing through the House. Sen. Ken Rozenboom, R-Oskaloosa, said Tuesday there is not sufficient support for the moratorium among Senate Republicans and he chose not to debate the bill at a State Government Committee meeting.

Despite House support, the Iowa Senate will not consider a 5-year pause on gaming licenses. State regulators may consider Cedar Rapids' casino bid.

Senators in the Iowa Legislature were told to keep their schedule clear Wednesday evening in anticipation of potential floor debate on a casino moratorium bill. Meanwhile, the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission is scheduled to vote Thursday on whether to grant a license for a planned $275 million casino and entertainment center near downtown Cedar Rapids.

Senate committee members said they did not believe there was enough support from Senate Republicans to advance the bill.

A week after the Iowa house rushed through legislation that would prohibit additional casino licenses in the state for 5 1/2 years, President Pro Tempore Ken Rozenboom, a Republican from Oskaloosa, said that there is not enough support in his chamber to pass the bill.
