A suspect is in custody after Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot Saturday, while State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were wounded.

Vance Luther Boelter, 57, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly killing a Minnesota Democratic state lawmaker and her husband while posing as a police officer, Governor Tim Walz said.

BELLE PLAINE, Minn. (AP) — The man suspected of shooting two Minnesota lawmakers, killing one of them, has been taken into custody, a law enforcement official said.

State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were gunned down at their home early on Saturday morning, but survived. Melissa Hortman - the top Democratic legislator in the state House - and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed. Yvette Hoffman said in a statement that she and her husband John were "devastated" by the Hortmans' deaths.

The names of some congressional officials from the state were listed in the suspected shooter’s papers.

Lawmakers on Sunday continued to reel from the shooting of two Democratic Minnesota state legislators in their homes that led to the death of one and her husband, contemplating a previously unthinkable world where democratically-elected representatives need full-time security details to protect them from the public.

"Hi everyone! I’m looking to get back into the U.S. Food Industry and I'm pretty open to positions," Boelter wrote on LinkedIn last month.

A Minnesota mayor says two state lawmakers were shot in their homes early Saturday. Mayor Ryan Sabas of Champlin said state senator John Hoffman and state representative Melissa Hortman were shot, and that Hoffman's wife was also shot.
